Did You Know?

All sales generated from The Purple Ribbon thrift store provides funding for women and children to stay in Mainstay´s emergency shelter. Your donations of clothing, household items, furniture, sporting goods, baby clothes, toys, etc. are truly making a difference! The store is located on the corner of Church Street and Fifth Avenue and is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00am to 3:00pm. There are two 15-minute loading zones located on Church Street to allow people to easily drop o. their donations with curbside assistance. The items are then taken to the expanded sorting area for volunteers to prepare for the store. The store floor space is larger and brighter making a nice environment for shoppers to experience and return to in the future. The thrift store is an important asset to Mainstay and the ongoing efforts to support the community. Please remember to donate those items you are not using anymore. Thank you!

We Have Windows

Mainstay has needed a newer, larger facility in order to continue providing much-needed services to our clients. At the same time, developers Tom and Sue Fazio, Jim Hall, and Gus Campano wanted Mainstay´s previous Main Street home to incorporate into their Main and Allen condominium project. The Fazio´s came up with the solution to both of these problems by purchasing a larger building and offering Mainstay a trade. Our new location is in the old First Federal Bank /Fifth Avenue Lighting building at the corner of 5th and Church. Too good to be true, you might think, but that´s not the end of the story. The development partners agreed for up to two years, to pay the interest on Mainstay´s $450,000 remodeling loan to convert the old bank/lighting store into a safe, comfortable shelter that will accommodate up to 22 women and children. While this has been a wonderful gift to Mainstay, it has also created for us the challenge of raising the funds to meet this obligation.

Mainstay, Inc. has completed the move into the building. The Purple Ribbon thrift store moved in December, followed by offices in January and clients by mid-February. Mainstay never missed a day of client services or thrift store operations due to the effort of the staff and volunteers to ensure a seamless transition.

The renovation from the old bank into a shelter was a tremendous challenge. New regulations stated that a new sprinkler system had to be installed. A new security system had to be installed in order to ensure client safety. The three floors offer a more secure shelter while the window exterior provides for a much brighter environment. The additional space allowed for daycare, play areas and meeting rooms which can be offered to the community and used by staff to provide services.

The Purple Ribbon thrift store has more space for accepting donations and sorting, making it more functional. The store is brighter and more attractive and thereby more customer friendly.

The following donations were received January 2008 through mid-March 2008. Thank you to all the generous individuals and organizations who help make a difference in the lives of those needing Mainstay´s services. Again, Thank you!

Stay and Play

A drop-in daycare center is a new service Mainstay, Inc. offers. The daycare center is a much needed service in Henderson County. Clients, both those in shelter and in our outreach programs, typically do not have transportation or anywhere to turn for daycare. The drop-in daycare will enable one to accomplish tasks such as going on job interviews and/or applying for resources. It´s hard to go on a job interview with children in tow. This service allows the clients to leave their children with daycare staff while they are handling these responsibilities. Toni Johnson painted colorful murals in the center which is located in the lower level of the new building. The facility has two play rooms, a small kitchen, and a quiet room with cribs, beds, and a changing station. Additionally, a large outdoorstyle play center is located on the main level. This wonderful play area was made possible with funding from the Community Foundation of Henderson County. The center is currently an afternoon drop-in facility for staff and clients. Staff supports the center with normal daycare fees allowing clients access. Mainstay is working toward making this a full time facility.
